Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: Technical Considerations for Safe Occlusion of the Cystic Artery and Duct

Program Description*

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for removing a diseased gallbladder and is the most common laparoscopic operation worldwide with approximately 300K performed worldwide annually. Ligating with manual polymer clips has proven to be as effective as metal clips and could potentially save undue costs. It is important for the entire surgical team to be familiar with the most common ligation clips to ensure they are used appropriately and safely.

In this CE module, surgical expert William Hope, MD, reviews the gold standard treatment for symptomatic gallstones, complications of surgery, and safe and efficient strategies for cystic duct and artery closure. To illustrate best practices, Dr. Hope shares video clips of LC procedures he recently performed, with a focus on avoiding surgical complications and the optimal use of hemostatic surgical clips.

Surgical Ligating Clip Technology and Its Role in Maintaining Laparoscopic Hemostasis

Program Description*

Advancements in technology have enabled the development of more effective instruments for ligating structures and safer surgical techniques to provide quick and easy hemostasis and to maintain optimal view of the surgical field. The method of choice can be influenced by many factors: ease of use and deployment of the device and the ability to provide a secure closure.

In this CE activity, Chan Park, MD, will discuss the evolution of ligation and demonstrate the appropriate selection of various ligation devices and their proper use, as well as explain the importance of optimal management of the ligation instruments—including open, endoscopic, and take-apart appliers—following surgery.
